returning to the jewel is a return from exile

Schmuck, Talente and Exempla-three words that have been for me both a revelation and confirmation of many things. On the revelatory side there was seeing the work of people such as Karl Fritsch, Robert Baines, David Huycke making a bowl, the piano project at Platina and the new up and coming makers and designers in Talente. The other was the fact that the show wasn't just about people who work in jewellery and object but also the ceramicists, glass blowers, university grad work, and people who are utilizing digital design in both graphic and textile fields. For me, too many names produced work that could be influential in my project but some stand outs were Robert Baines, Rachel Bell, Yung-huei Chao, Attai Chen, Reiko Ishiyama and Alessandra Pizzini. All the work from these people display exacting technical skill/s and repetition of motifs, but they don't always use metal. Attai Chen working with paper would be one example. After  Schmuck, the "students" decided to visit some of the other exhibits around town. The first was Der Galliumhort von Obertraun by Peter Bauhuis, which Karin later informed us was about jewellery influenced by historical work. It was interesting as Peter used a variety of scales in the work that wouldn't make the pieces wearable.
The next was an adventure in just trying to see the work in 'Tschechisher Schmuck in Europa' as the exhibition hadn't actually opened but the gentleman very kindly let us view the work anyway. The work had some influence from Malevich and the Russian Suprematists. The last show of the day was 'Rebels of Love' and the thing that was interesting was not so much the work for me but the layout in the gallery. In one area there was a tunnel that was lined with copper colored plastic that as you walked down billowed about and created a rustling noise as walked by to get to the next exhibit. After all these adventures we went back to the hostel and had a yummy dinner of smoked mackerel and berry compote for desert.

P.S Apologies To Robert Baines, Gerd Rothman and Karl Fritsch for the underhanded use of the great title from their brilliant exhibition.
